Keep Your Sunny Side Up

Bangkok is an amazing city filled with art from all over the world. When I first arrived here last year, I was not interested in art at all. It wasn’t something that had an impact on me at all. I was bored when these topics came up in school. I was never a good artist, so I never really understood the point.

Although since I arrived in Bangkok about 16 months ago, I’ve had a huge change in perspective about art. I love it now. I still don’t understand everything, but I finally realized that’s the beauty of it. Everything from poems, song lyrics, and essays I’m really starting to soak up and truly enjoy. My bedroom is filled with pieces of art from every country I’ve been to. My parents are going to be in shock when I arrive home with a suitcase just filled with paintings. I’m glad I finally had this realization. I recently heard a great quote from a friend “Earth without art is just ‘eh’.” Thanks for that tip, Joey.

I saw the most amazing simple collection of art at one of the famous Bangkok malls this week. For those of you who do not know when it comes to malls in Thailand, they do not mess around. These are some of the most impressive architectural buildings in Bangkok. Filled with artwork and different types of beauty including waterfalls, gardens and rooftop bars.

The piece of art I saw was from a woman named Juli Baker. In the quick blurb written about her she stated that she loves “collecting art pieces from kids”, she says, “they way they paint always intrigues me.” When I was looking at some of her artwork that filled the main hall of this mall I honestly thought it was a kids’ work. The simplicity of the art made me realize there is so much beauty in all that we create.

She had many different quotes in the paintings that stood out to me including, “You are beautiful”, “The art of having no plan at all”, and “nothing is worth it if you aren’t happy.” These were all wonderful little sayings, but none was more powerful to me than the title of this post, “Keep Your Sunny Side Up.”

When I was young my grandma used to make us an amazing breakfast. I still love her home fries especially when she combines regular and sweet potatoes in the dish. Her famous eggs were sunny side up. For a long time, I never felt comfortable ordering my eggs this way at restaurants because I truly believed they were her creation or at the very least she came up with the unique name. For years I constantly ordered scrambled eggs until one year a friend ordered sunny side up eggs at a diner. I said, “Wait, when did my grandma make you breakfast?”

Unfortunately, I have now learned that my grandma did not invent sunny side up eggs or the name. She still does make the best in the world though. Especially, when you combine them with her famous home fries. Even though my grandma did not invent the name sunny side up, she has always brought this idea into my world. She is always doing little things to make the people in her life happier. Always bringing the sunny side to her friends and family. Thank you for your inspiration, Grandma.

Try to do the little things to stay positive and bring your positivity into the world. When you wake up in the morning and you don’t feel like getting out of bed, “Keep your sunny side up.” When you are dreading the fact that it’s only Monday, “Keep your sunny side up.” When you are having a rough day with work, a relationship or a family member, “Keep your sunny side up.” There are so many little ways that you can bring a little more light into this world. The more aware of these little things we become the easier they will be to practice.

My challenge to you is to use this simple egg analogy to remember to look at the positive and sunny side of things. The world has too many “bad eggs” right now. We need as many people as possible to bring their positivity and light into this world. Please keep your sunny side up.

Thank you Juli Baker for this beautiful quote and artwork.

Thank you Grandma for living your life this way. You have set an amazing example for me. I love you so much.

Thank you all for reading. I always appreciate it. Please continue spreading your good clean vibes. #GCVs
